We have recently finished upgrading and transferring our blogs to hosting with Webfaction. Webfaction has been a great move for us so far and our WPMU installation has been seamless. Integration of Intense Debate as our future commenting system has been a little quirky, but overall very nice. So, what’s next on our plate here at Mid-Valley Newspapers?

The web team here is very excited to start on a brand new Home Owner’s site, built around Wordpress that will have everything from DIY to Home and Garden info. If you are a home owner looking for info on certain projects, just interested in seeing some awesome photos from other people’s projects, or are renting and just need some good reads or great ideas, this will be the place to be.

A major component of this site will be exclusive access to local businesses that can help supply you with the know-how and materials you need to get any job done. From construction to home decor, you’ll be able to search and locate any business in the Willamette Valley. We will also be including videos, user submitted content and will be on the look-out for some local people who would like to be guest writers. If you are interested, email Matt Neznanski at matt.neznanski[at]lee[dot]net and let him know your area of expertise and how you’d like to be involved.

When putting together blogs and websites with multiple users, it’s often very difficult to figure out exactly what features are needed. Working with Wordpress MU, this becomes even more apparent with the use of MU Plugins (sitewide plugins for use by all users) and regular Plugins (manually activated).

So today we’ve decided that all of our blogs should have podcasting functionality from the get-go. Of course we turned to Podpress for the plugin, and so far it is working pretty well within our templates. This post will be our first test of the podcasting, so below you should see a podcast available. (crossing fingers!)

Feel free to listen to it, and if you have any feedback on Our Projects listed to the right of this post, feel free to drop a comment or email us.

I'm happy to say we are finally upgrading and consolidating our staff blogs onto a better system, in this case: Wordpress Multi-User. This serves more than one purpose. Administration will now be easier to control, as well as the design and implementation of widgets across the platform.

Our bloggers will be happy to use the new WP2.7 interface available in the WPMU install. We also will be streamlining our use of images, videos, and audio. As each new blog is transferred and placed into the "collective", I will add them to the right hand column, under Our Projects. Enjoy!
