I was saddened yesterday when I heard the news about Merlin Olsen’s death at age 69.
When I was in high school, Olsen was in the news a lot as a member of the Los Angeles Rams’ “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line. Later, he used his great voice as a football commentator and television actor. One of his roles was that of a priest in the early ’80s TV series “Father Murphy.”

An appeal by the Oregon State football team for Darrell Catchings to receive a medical hardship wavier for last season was granted by the Pacific-10 Conference on Thursday, according to the Beavers.

The Oakland Tribune held a media poll in which Pacific-10 Conference men’s basketball writers voted for their all-Pac-10 team, MVP, coach of the year, etc.
For my five-man team I had: Landry Fields, Stanford; Quincy Pondexter, UW; Jerome Randle, Cal; Derrick Williams, UA and Klay Thompson, WSU.
